5 Day Zanzibar Island & Beach Escape

OVERVIEW

After days spent tracking wildlife across East Africa’s savannahs, Zanzibar offers a completely different pace. Warm Indian Ocean water replaces dusty game tracks. The air smells of salt and cloves, and the tide quietly reshapes the shoreline twice a day.

This five-day Zanzibar experience combines the island’s cultural history with several days on its northern beaches. You will explore historic Stone Town, visit a working spice plantation, and then continue north where long stretches of white sand meet clear turquoise water.

Your Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Zanzibar / Transfer to Stone Town

Upon arrival at Zanzibar International Airport, you will be met by your private driver and transferred to your hotel in Stone Town. The drive takes about 15 minutes.

Stone Town is the historic heart of the island and one of the most culturally significant places on the East African coast. For centuries it served as a major trading port linking Africa with Arabia, Persia, and India. The narrow streets still carry that history in their architecture, markets, and carved wooden doors.

After check-in, the rest of the afternoon is free to settle in and explore at your own pace. Many travelers take a relaxed walk along the Forodhani waterfront, where fishing boats return in the evening and local food vendors set up stalls as the sun begins to set.

Dinner can be enjoyed at one of the town’s rooftop restaurants overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Day 2 – Stone Town Walking Tour & Spice Plantation

After breakfast, meet your guide for a private guided walking tour of Stone Town.

The tour explores the island’s cultural history through several important landmarks. Highlights include the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, the former Sultan’s Palace, and the historic Anglican Cathedral built on the site of the former slave market.

Walking through Stone Town reveals layers of history. Arab trading houses sit beside Indian merchant buildings while mosques, churches, and small local markets share the same narrow streets.

Later in the morning you will leave town and drive inland to visit one of Zanzibar’s traditional spice plantations.

Zanzibar was once one of the world’s largest producers of cloves, and the island remains famous for its spices today. During the visit you will walk through the plantation with a local guide who explains how crops such as cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric, and black pepper are grown and harvested.

Guests are encouraged to taste fresh tropical fruits and spices during the tour.

In the afternoon return to Stone Town for a relaxed evening.

Day 3 – Transfer to the Northern Beaches of Zanzibar

After breakfast you will leave Stone Town and travel north to Zanzibar’s most beautiful beaches.

The drive takes approximately one hour, passing small villages, coconut plantations, and glimpses of the island’s interior countryside.

Your destination is the Nungwi or Kendwa coastline, widely considered the best beach area on the island. Unlike many parts of Zanzibar, the tides here do not pull the ocean far from shore, meaning swimming conditions remain excellent throughout the day.

Upon arrival, check in at your beach resort and spend the afternoon enjoying the coastline. The sand here is soft and bright white, and the water is calm and warm throughout most of the year.

Sunset on the northern coast is particularly beautiful. Traditional wooden dhows often pass along the horizon as the sky turns deep orange over the Indian Ocean.

Day 4 – Snorkeling Excursion & Ocean Activities

Today you will explore the waters surrounding Zanzibar.

After breakfast, depart for a snorkeling excursion to the coral reefs near Mnemba Island, located just off the northeast coast of Zanzibar.

Mnemba is known for its clear water and vibrant coral reefs. The marine environment here supports a wide variety of tropical fish, reef formations, and occasional sea turtles. Snorkeling equipment and experienced guides are provided.

After several hours in the water, return to your beach resort for a relaxed afternoon.

Guests who prefer a slower pace may choose to remain at the resort and enjoy the beach, swimming pool, or spa facilities.

In the evening, a traditional dhow sunset cruise can be arranged along the coastline. These wooden sailing boats have been used on the East African coast for centuries and remain one of the most atmospheric ways to experience the Indian Ocean at sunset.

Accommodation: Same as Day 3

Day 5 – Departure

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast overlooking the ocean before checking out.

Your driver will transfer you back to Zanzibar International Airport, a journey of approximately one hour depending on your departure time.

From here you may connect to international flights or continue onward to another destination.
