4 Days Double Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda and Uganda

OVERVIEW

This unique itinerary allows travelers to experience gorilla trekking in two countries within a single journey. The adventure begins in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park before crossing the border into Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, one of Africa’s most biologically rich rainforests. Although the gorillas belong to the same endangered species, the trekking environments are dramatically different. Rwanda’s bamboo forests lie on the slopes of ancient volcanoes, while Bwindi’s dense rainforest forms a thick jungle landscape where towering trees and tangled vegetation create an entirely different trekking experience.

Your Itinerary

Day 1 – Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

Your journey begins in Kigali where you meet your guide before leaving the city behind and driving north through Rwanda’s rolling hills. Terraced farms and small villages line the road while the Virunga volcanoes gradually rise ahead on the horizon.

Arrival at Volcanoes National Park introduces the forested slopes where mountain gorillas roam among bamboo forests and volcanic valleys. The evening is spent relaxing at your lodge while preparing for tomorrow’s trek.

Day 2 – Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

The morning begins at the ranger station where guides brief visitors before leading small groups into the forest. The trek follows narrow trails through bamboo stands and dense vegetation as trackers search for one of the habituated gorilla families.

Eventually the forest opens and the gorillas appear feeding quietly among the vegetation. Spending an hour with the group provides a rare opportunity to observe their social interactions and gentle behaviour.

Day 3 – Cross to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Leaving Volcanoes National Park, the journey crosses the Rwanda–Uganda border into the dramatic highlands surrounding Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The landscape becomes thicker and more densely forested as the road winds through the mountains.

Bwindi is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests and shelters nearly half of the world’s mountain gorilla population. Arrival at your lodge offers time to settle in while listening to the sounds of the surrounding forest.
